XSurgical, a firm developing and bringing to market a remotely controlled surgical robot, welcomed U.S. Department of Defense’s Dr. Darrin Frye as a speaker on the needs of today’s military health care providers when protecting and treating warfighters on the challenging battlefields.

Frye’s current mission is to provide oversight support and assistance in the visioning and support of the research and development of Defense Health capabilities that will enable military health care providers to protect and treat warfighters so they may continue to dominate on the battlefields of tomorrow. Frye explained that the changes in today’s battlefields and air space have made it challenging to evacuate patients to a different location for treatment making surgical robotics technology especially promising to expeditionary medical, and theater hospital experts.

Having served in the Army Reserves as a Preventive Medicine Officer for 13 years, Frye now operates in the JPC-1 office within the United States Army Medical Research and Material Command (USAMRMC), supporting the J-9 (Research and Development Directorate), Defense Health Agency. He provides oversight support and assistance in the visioning, and supports research to close Defense Health capability gaps that will enable military health care providers to protect and treat warfighters so they may continue to dominate on the battlefields of tomorrow.

His prior assignments include the 807th Medical Command, supporting Operation Enduring Freedom 2001-2007 where he served as a subject matter expert on Disease Non-Battle Injury (DNBI). In 2003, he was mobilized by Task Force Ironhorse with the 4th Infantry Division, providing medical mission support.

XSurgical is working to develop and bring to market a remotely controlled surgical robot, which can be deployed in situations of disaster recovery, battlefield and travels into space. The surgical robot will be able to perform surgery, guided by surgeons from remote locations. The concept has received interest from key people at the Department of Defense. XSurgical is also working to develop the artificial intelligence to make subsequent robots fully autonomous.
