More than a decade ago, Dr. William Leiva, senior program manager of sterile reprocessing at Medtronic, observed something troubling. He noticed that some sterile barrier systems (SBS), like peel patches, looked “brittle” or “toasted” after sterilization.

In case you missed it, AAMI has introduced a new Technical Information Report (TIR) to provide guidance for healthcare facilities when transporting medical devices externally from their facility. This new guidance document exemplifies the synergy between users, manufacturers and regulatory sectors to develop a resource for users.

As we head into the Fall 2025 Sterilization Standards Week and prepare to kick off new standards projects, AAMI announced new co-chair appointments for several of its Sterilization Standards working groups, including several first-time co-chairs.

Gerry O’Dell is a past co-chair of AAMI’s Industrial Ethylene Oxide (EO) and Moist Heat (MH) Sterilization Working Groups, and she was named an AAMI Fellow in 2019. O’Dell is a Certified Industrial Sterilization Specialist (CISS) for ethylene oxide, moist heat, and radiation (RAD), and holds a master’s degree in microbiology from the University of South Florida.
