Northern Montana Health Care Breaks Ground on OR & ICU Project

Northern Montana Health Care (NMHC) recently marked a milestone with the groundbreaking of a major expansion project at Northern Montana Hospital in March.

This investment reflects a continued commitment to advancing healthcare for Havre and communities across the Hi-Line, according to a press release.

“Community members, local leaders, NMHC board members, staff, and project partners gathered for the ceremony, celebrating the beginning of a transformative project that will expand and modernize the hospital’s surgical and intensive care capabilities for decades to come,” the release states.

NMHC CEO Dr. Kevin Harada emphasized that caring for the community is at the heart of the organization’s mission, and that this expansion represents a long-term commitment to patients and staff. He noted that the project reflects NMHC’s dedication to delivering state-of-the-art medicine locally while continuing to grow and adapt to the evolving challenges of rural healthcare.

The project includes approximately 31,000 square feet of new construction and 18,000 square feet of remodeled space, creating nearly 50,000 square feet dedicated to advanced surgical and critical care services.

Planned upgrades include:

• four robot-assisted operating rooms;

• two endoscopy suites;

• an on-site pharmacy; and

• a fully modernized intensive care unit.

Harada explained that existing operating rooms have reached their limits because of increasing demands of modern healthcare technology. He noted that newer equipment requires more space, power, and flexibility, making the expansion a necessary step in maintaining high-quality care.

The ICU will also see significant enhancements, including upgraded monitoring systems and new portable equipment designed to improve patient care and mobility. Alysia Mosness, director of emergency services and ICU, highlighted the organization’s focus on creating a more patient- and family-centered care environment, supported by improved technology and more adaptable equipment.

Harada also shared that the expansion allows NMHC to increase surgical capacity and grow service offerings in key areas such as robotic-assisted procedures, orthopedics, and women’s health. He emphasized that the goal is to ensure patients can access high-quality, advanced care close to home without the need to travel long distances.

“Construction is now underway in partnership with Sletten Construction Company, with careful planning to ensure hospital services continue uninterrupted throughout the process. The project is expected to take approximately two and a half years to complete, with full completion anticipated in 2028. As construction begins, NMHC remains focused on its mission: delivering exceptional care, embracing innovation, and ensuring that advanced healthcare services remain accessible right here on the Hi-Line,” the release adds.
