Expert Discusses Need to Evacuate Surgical Smoke

The recent OR Today webinar “Evacuate Surgical Smoke: Everyone Has a Right to Clean Air” sponsored by IC Medical was eligible for 1 CE credit. OR Today has been approved and is licensed to be a Continuing Education Provider with the California Board of Registered Nurses, License #16623.

Richard Howard, North American Sales Manager at IC Medical, discussed surgical smoke in this informative webinar. With nearly 20 years of experience exclusive to the smoke evacuation industry, he has a deep passion for helping clinicians and other stakeholders with the creation of a surgical smoke free environment of care.

During the webinar, Howard discussed the harmful effects of surgical smoke and explained the benefits of using a surgical smoke evacuation system. He also shared guidelines established by regulatory agencies and professional associations related to surgical smoke. Attendees will now be able to identify characteristics of an ideal smoke evacuation system that can aid in product selection and identify steps for quality assurance and process improvement to increase compliance with safety guidelines.

The webinar was popular with 92 individuals in attendance. A recording of the session is available for on-demand viewing at ORTodayWebinars.live.

Attendees provided feedback via a survey that included the question, “What were your take-aways from today’s webinar?”

“The importance in protecting our staff through the education, and collaborative team approach to safe work practices in the OR,” said Sharon Gelardi, RN, COO, The Gastro Surgi Center of NJ.

“Interesting about which states have mandates on surgical evacuation of smoke,” said Kimberly Rossell, Associate Director perioperative Services, Banner Ocotillo Medical Center.

“The harms/risks to all from surgical smoke,” answered Michelle Woolf, Clinical Resource Nurse, Bermuda Hospitals Board.

“I learned a lot about various potential hazards to our lungs when exposed to surgical smoke!” exclaimed Fidelia Roster, VP, Halifax Health.
