Understanding, compassion and supportive actions build strong relationships. Nowhere is this truer than between the operating room and the sterile processing department. A sterile processing task, such as the position of an instrument on a stringer, can impact compliance, efficiencies, and patient safety in the operating room.
Arthur Henderson, senior clinical education specialist at STERIS, discussed understanding OR needs and how implementing good tray assembly techniques in sterile processing can help reduce pain points and build a strong relationship between these departments. He also fielded questions from attendees during the webinar.
Henderson is a healthcare educator with more than 25 years of experience in GI, open heart, neurosurgery, and cardio-thoracic intensive care. In his previous role he was the assistant manager of the OR at a large hospital based in Northern California as well the education coordinator for the California Central Service Association. He is a Certified Nurse-Operating Room (CNOR) since 1994 and is a member of the Association of peri-Operative Registered Nurses Inc. (AORN) and holds Certification with IAHCSMM as a CRCST and CHL. He is also an active member in SGNA, APIC, and IAHCSMM.
It was a popular session with almost 100 attendees for the live webinar. A recording of the webinar is available for on-demand viewing at ORToday.com/webinars. Tara Graham, RN, with Aspirus Ironwood Hospital in Michigan won a OR Today cooler bag during the webinar!
Attendees were asked, “Why do you love being a perioperative professional?”
“I like being able to work behind the scenes. My job is to make sure my instruments are sterile so the patient is safe from infection,” said Dustin Marciniak, SPS lead tech, Jackie Walorski VA clinic.
“It’s like watching an anatomy book open in front of your eyes,” shared Susan Powers, RN Clinic Ops Manager/Surgical assistant, UW Health Rockford Eye Clinic.
“Educating the SPD team on their crucial role in quality patient care and best practices in ensuring zero defects in the trays we produce,” said Tracey Raymond, MGR of Education and Training, Vested Medical.
