Ethics can be defined as “the code of good conduct for an individual or group.”1 Ethics serves as the moral compass guiding the actions and decisions of professionals in every field, ensuring the delivery of high-quality services while maintaining the trust and confidence of the public. In the realm of perioperative nursing, adherence to ethical standards is not only a professional obligation but a fundamental cornerstone in providing safe and compassionate patient care. While the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics provides a comprehensive framework for ethical nursing practice, credentialing organizations such as the Competency and Credentialing Institute (CCI) play a vital role in upholding these principles and fostering accountability among their certificants.
At its core, an ethics code for a profession lays out a set of principles and standards that define the expected conduct and behaviors of individuals within that profession. In the context of perioperative nursing, the ANA Code of Ethics serves as a guiding light, emphasizing the values of respect, integrity, advocacy and accountability. It outlines the ethical responsibilities of nurses, promoting patient dignity, autonomy and the delivery of safe and effective care. Perioperative nurses are expected to adhere to these ethical guidelines, ensuring that their practice is rooted in compassion, empathy and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of patient care. Adherence to these ethical practices helps to promote patients’ confidence in the profession and in the care they receive.
However, ensuring the adherence to ethical standards goes beyond the mere dissemination of guidelines. It necessitates a system of accountability that holds professionals responsible for their actions and decisions. Credentialing organizations such as CCI play a pivotal role in this process by implementing stringent policies and procedures that monitor and enforce ethical conduct among their certificants. Safeguarding the integrity of its certifications is of paramount importance to CCI and enforcing ethical conduct is a critical component of this process.
CCI‘s commitment to fostering an ethical culture is reflected in its robust requirements for reporting any investigations or violations. By establishing clear protocols for reporting alleged ethics violations by certificants, CCI demonstrates its dedication to maintaining the integrity and credibility of the perioperative nursing profession. This proactive approach not only upholds ethical standards but also bolsters public trust in the competence and ethical integrity of certified perioperative nurses.

The Ethics page on CCI’s official website serves as a central hub of information, providing guidance and resources for the public and certificants alike. This page offers comprehensive insights into the ethical expectations placed on perioperative nurses. The Ethics Reporting page also provides detailed instructions on how to report any alleged ethics violations by a CCI certificant. Knowledge of alleged conduct by a licensed nurse that may violate a nursing law or rule (or a related state or federal law) may be reported to the Board of Nursing in the state where the conduct allegedly occurred.
By fostering transparency and accessibility, CCI ensures that ethical standards remain a cornerstone of the perioperative nursing profession, reinforcing the importance of ethical accountability and responsible practice within the health care ecosystem.
For certificants, the Ethics page serves as a valuable resource, offering a comprehensive understanding of the ethical standards they are expected to uphold. It provides clarity on the repercussions of unethical behavior and underscores the significance of upholding the trust and confidence placed in the hands of perioperative nurses. By adhering to the guidelines outlined on the Ethics page, certificants reaffirm their commitment to ethical practice and contribute to the maintenance of the profession’s integrity and credibility. This foundation of transparency provides additional reassurance to stakeholders that CCI continuously upholds accountability for maintaining ethical standards among certificants.
In conclusion, the ethical practice of perioperative nursing is a critical component in safeguarding patient welfare and upholding the values of integrity and compassion within the healthcare domain. The ANA Code of Ethics serves as a fundamental guide for nurses, while credentialing organizations such as CCI play a crucial role in enforcing ethical standards and fostering accountability among their certificants. Through robust reporting mechanisms and comprehensive guidelines outlined on their ethics page, CCI remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting ethical excellence and ensuring the delivery of safe and ethical perioperative care for all patients.
