Comparison Study: Bella Blankets® Protective Coverlets Improve Breast Imaging Tissue Acquisition

Sponsored by Beekley Medical

This study assesses the impact of Bella Blankets® protective coverlets on increasing breast tissue visualization during mammography. Proper breast positioning is essential for high-quality imaging and early cancer detection, but challenges like patient discomfort and tissue slippage can hinder optimal results. Bella Blankets®, with their textured, non-slip surface, aim to enhance grip, comfort, and stability during compression, enabling better tissue visualization.

A comparative study of 58 patients analyzed mammograms taken in consecutive years, with the only variable being the use of Bella Blankets® in the current year. Results showed that 77% of participants experienced increased tissue acquisition, with an average increase of 0.41 cm in the posterior nipple line (PNL). Visualization of key anatomical features also improved, including the pectoralis muscle (48%), retroglandular tissue (from 86% to 96%), and open inframammary fold (from 67% to 87%). These improvements were consistent across various breast sizes and patient ages.

The findings demonstrate that Bella Blankets® are a low-cost, effective tool for enhancing mammogram image quality and diagnostic confidence. By improving breast positioning, reducing tissue slippage, and acting as a sanitary barrier, these coverlets support the goal of accurate and early breast cancer detection while improving patient comfort.
