In American nursing there has been slow, grudging progress on meaningful conversations about competency and competency assessment. Some state boards of nursing are using the terminology but there is no widespread consensus on the use of the term.

The makeup of the American nursing workforce is rapidly changing as our health care system transitions to value-based reimbursement. I am proud to say that CCI plays a small but significant role in this transition as we develop programs to assist perioperative nurses in their Continuous Professional Development (CPD) journey throughout a career.

What credentialing and certification will look like in the near future is a topic of much discussion at CCI and this issue was recently the focus of our strategic planning efforts.

In October of 2019 the Competency and Credentialing Institute (CCI) published a position paper titled, “The BSN-Educated Nursing Workforce.”
