As technology and equipment advance, and new procedures are added, every surgery department may confront demolition, renovation or construction at some point. Assessing risk prior to construction includes looking at utility requirements, air quality requirements, infection control, vibrations, noise and other hazards. 

Providers of surgical services need to do better when it comes to informed consent.

Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) is just one of these events that may occur without warning in susceptible individuals receiving certain triggering anesthetics. According to the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States (MHAUS), approximately one in 2,000 people have a genetic predisposition that puts them at risk of developing MH. 

ASC surgical teams cannot underestimate the significance of complete, accurate and legible medical records. Unfortunately, accreditation standards related to form and content of the medical record are often cited as non-compliant.
