Webinar Highlights Surgical Instrument Selection, Reprocessing & Cleanliness Testing

Healthcare professionals received a comprehensive review of surgical instrumentation best practices during OR Today’s recent webinar, “All About Surgical Instrumentation,” sponsored by Ruhof. The educational session featured Robert B. Dybec, BSN, RN, MS, CNOR, nurse manager of the operating room at NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island and a consultant to Ruhof. He shared practical guidance on instrument selection, reprocessing and cleanliness verification.

The webinar explored key considerations for selecting surgical instruments for purchase, initial sterilization processes and the critical role of proper reprocessing in supporting patient safety.

Dybec emphasized that successful instrument reprocessing begins immediately after use. He discussed the importance of pre-cleaning at the point of use to help prevent soil from drying on instruments and explained how effective cleaning practices support successful sterilization.

The presentation also examined the complete reprocessing cycle, including the safe reuse of surgical instruments and the importance of following evidence-based practices and manufacturers’ instructions for use. Dybec reviewed methods for evaluating instrument cleanliness, helping attendees better understand how cleaning verification can strengthen quality assurance programs and reduce the risk of residual contamination.

In addition to discussing instrument care and maintenance, the webinar reinforced the value of routinely testing instruments for cleanliness rather than relying solely on visual inspection. Attendees learned about available verification methods that can help confirm cleaning effectiveness before instruments are returned to service.

Participants praised the educational content and practical takeaways.

“A refresher on some things but a few things added to my knowledge base,” said Candance Little, clinical director at Alphavets Inc.

“A great review,” added Lorraina Zuba, manager at BID Plymouth.
