Novant Health Selects Genesis Automation for Enterprise Supply Chain

Novant Health, noted for employing world-class technology throughout its multi-state integrated delivery network, has selected Genesis Automation’s Enterprise Supply Chain Management solution to enable system-wide visibility of inventory on hand, better clinician adoption and utilization of products and improved procedural documentation.

Novant Health will use the Genesis Enterprise Inventory Point-of-Use Platform to manage materials arriving at and dispersed through its Logistics Center (central supply warehouse) located near Charlotte, N.C. as well as supplies arriving directly to each of their 15 acute care hospitals. The Inventory Management and Clinical Point of Care modules will give staff at each facility visibility to their inventory and allow them to track movement throughout the hospital. The solution supports patient safety, allowing Novant Health to capture key implant, equipment and supply information at the Point of Care. The Genesis Enterprise solution will be integrated to Novant Health’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems for in-depth patient safety reporting, outcomes analyses, case costing, purchasing, A/R reconciliation and forecasting intelligence.

“As an organization, the Genesis Automation solution plays into our digital approach for healthcare,” says Mark Welch, Senior Vice President, Supply Chain, Novant Health. “We require and rely on systems that help keep us in sync. Genesis has a proven ability to unite large multi-site organizations, simultaneously giving executive leadership visibility to the entire system’s supply chain while granting each hospital the flexibility necessary to streamline operations and optimize departmental workflows.”

Novant Health has some very specific goals, which would be difficult to attain without the comprehensive Supply Chain Management solution Genesis provides. Welch explains, “In addition to system-wide visibility of all inventory on hand, we want to help clinicians better understand product utilization and how their selections impact patient outcomes. We can use this data to help standardize preference cards. As an added benefit, capturing this information at the point of care will help us improve charge capture, avoid overcharges, eliminate waste and variation and speed our open-and-close case rate.”

Based on experience with other clients, Genesis expects a big culture shift within the Novant Health organization as they move from a periodical inventory system to perpetual inventory.

“Novant Health already has excellent supply chain leadership, and throughout the organization, an impressive commitment to using technology to support a value-based patient care experience,” says Noel O’Hanlon, Founder and CEO, Genesis Automation. “That said, the real-time nature of the Genesis solution will have a tremendous impact. Novant Health is going from an environment where they have to wait days and weeks to capture total case cost to having this data in real-time.”

The impact extends to better inventory management; improving the good (enhanced product availability with automated re-order, product utilization, recall management, bill-only management, etc.) and eliminating the bad (expiry, waste and over-ordering, etc.).

Novant Health will go live with Genesis Automation Enterprise solution, which includes the Inventory Management, Clinical Point of Care, Tissue Tracking and Analytics modules, as well as integration to the EHR and ERP at Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center by April 2019. From there, Genesis will roll-out all modules across Novant Health’s other acute care facilities within two years.

“We couldn’t be more delighted to have Novant Health as a collaborative partner,” says O’Hanlon. “We have a mutual commitment to delivering the best possible experience for clinical, operational and administrative staff so that they in turn can deliver safe, effective patient care.”

The Genesis Automation in Healthcare solution is widely adopted throughout the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), and is GS1-certified in the U.S. and UK. To learn more, visit www.genesisahc.com.
